- A Brief History:
CBE-Toronto became active in 2001 thanks to the initiative of Miriam Charter, Sharon Tam and Karen Jutzi. Two initial think-tank meetings were held to discuss the possibility of starting a Toronto chapter.
Book Studies
In 2002, CBE-Toronto started having monthly book study meetings at the home of Margaret Amanatides. Some of the books that CBE-Toronto has studied
include: Bilezikian’s Beyond Sex Roles, Gretchen Gabelein Hull’s Equal to Serve, Aida Besançon Spencer’s Beyond the Curse, Miriam Adeney’s Daughters of Islam, Kevin Giles’s The Trinity and Subordinationism, Elaine Storkey's Origins of Difference - The Gender Debate Revisited, and Ronald W. Pierce and Rebecca Merrill Groothuis’ Discovering Biblical Equality:
Complementarity without Hierarchy. In 2004, these book studies moved to the more central location of Danforth Mennonite church.
Community Events
In addition to regular monthly meetings, CBE-Toronto organizes semi-annual community events. Special speakers have included: Mimi Haddad, Dr. Gordon Fee, Dr. Miriam Adeney, Dr. Kevin Giles, Sharon Tam, Dr. Tony Campolo, and Margaret Amanatides.
A ministry of Danforth Mennonite Church
In 2006, CBE-Toronto became an official ministry of Danforth Mennonite Church. This connection to a local church gives CBE-Toronto a home base in the city and the opportunity to become a bona fide charity.
