CBE-Toronto became active in 2001 thanks to the initiative of Sharon and Henry Tam.
Book Studies
In 2002, we started having monthly book studies at the home of Margaret Amanatides. Some of the books that were studied include: Bilezikian’s Beyond Sex Roles, Gretchen Gabelein Hull’s Equal to Serve, Aida Besançon Spencer’s Beyond the Curse, Miriam Adeney’s Daughters of Islam, Kevin Giles’s The Trinity and Subordinationism, Elaine Storkey's Origins of Difference - The Gender Debate Revisited, and Ronald W. Pierce and Rebecca Merrill Groothuis’ Discovering Biblical Equality: Complementarity without Hierarchy, John Stackhouse’s Finally Feminist: Why Both Sides are Wrong – and Right, The Priscilla Papers, Kristina LaCelle-Peterson’s Liberating Tradition: Women’s Identity and Vocation in Christian Perspective, and most recently Austin Stouffer’s 95 More for the Door: A layperson’s biblical guide to today’s Gender Reformation. In 2004, these book studies moved to the more central location of Danforth Mennonite church.
Community Events
In addition to regular monthly meetings, CBE-Toronto organizes larger community events. Special speakers have included: Mimi Haddad, Gordon Fee, Miriam Adeney, Kevin Giles, Sharon Tam, Tony Campolo, Richard Longnecker, and others.
2008 CBE-International Conference
In 2008, we were pleased to host the CBE-International Conference with world-reknown speakers such as: William Webb, Esme Bowers, Bonnie Wurzbacher, and Ruth Tucker.
A ministry of Danforth Mennonite Church
In 2006, CBE-Toronto became an official ministry of Danforth Mennonite Church. This connection to a local church gives CBE-Toronto a home base in the city and the opportunity to become a bona fide charity.
